American Portraits

American Portraits is a mixed repertory program about the people who make up this country: what they believe, what they carry, and what they build. Each work on the program is a portrait.

At its center is To Heal, choreographed by Christopher Stuart and set to spirituals performed by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a deeply moving work reflecting themes of faith, resilience, and renewal. Reveille, also by Christopher Stuart, is an ode to those called to serve and to the families, partners, and communities who share in that sacrifice, tracing the anticipation of departure, the weight of separation, and the memories that remain. Stuart’s New Beginnings, an ensemble work for the women of Alabama Ballet, celebrating the women whose strength has shaped this country. And finally, Dispersal, choreographed by Christopher Stuart, is a contemporary and abstract exploration of motion, connection, and transformation. Closing the program is Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux, choreographed by George Balanchine, a brilliant display of neoclassical energy and pure joy.

Together these works span generations of American choreography and musical influence, holding tradition and innovation in a single evening. Staged in the year of America’s 250th anniversary, American Portraits is a reflection on where we have been, who we are now, and what we are still becoming.
